What this site is

Owlery Knits publishes original reference material about hand knitting: charted stitch notes, gauge and yardage arithmetic, tutorials and garment patterns. Everything is written for a person holding needles, and everything is checked by knitting it.

No warranty on the numbers

The material is provided as is and as available, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness or fitness for a particular purpose. Gauge, yardage and yarn substitution figures are estimates based on stated assumptions. Your hands, your yarn and your needles will produce a different number, and the only measurement that matters is the one you take from your own swatch.

Knitting is your responsibility

Patterns describe a construction that worked for the sample knitted by us. Substituting yarn, changing needle size, skipping a swatch or altering a stitch count changes the result. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Owlery Knits is not liable for any loss arising from the use of, or reliance on, this site or its content, including wasted yarn, wasted time or a garment that does not fit.

Health and safety

Some items described here - particularly items for babies and small children - carry safety considerations that knitting instructions cannot cover. Buttons, beads, long strands and loose ends can be a choking or strangulation hazard. You are responsible for choosing appropriate materials, attaching any embellishment securely, and following the safety guidance of the relevant authority in your country.

Intellectual property

The text, charts, tables, generated figures and code on this site belong to Owlery Knits unless otherwise stated, and are protected by copyright. You may knit from any pattern here and sell what you make; that has always been the case and these terms do not change it. You may quote short extracts with a link to the source page. You may not republish substantial parts of a pattern, redistribute the charts as your own, or present the material as a commercial pattern collection.

Third-party links

Links to yarn manufacturers and other references are provided for convenience. We do not control those sites, do not endorse their content, and are not responsible for their accuracy, availability or practices.

Acceptable use

Do not attempt to disrupt the site, scrape it at a volume that degrades service for others, or republish its charts in bulk. Do not present the material as personalised instruction to a paying student without permission.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms; the date at the top of the page changes when we do. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the revised terms.
